Raising Children in More Than One Language

A FREE seminar for parents, early childhood and pre-school workers, grandparents, teachers and others interested in bilingual education. Raising childrenin more than one language is a very important process. There are many positive strategies that can be employed. ISSUES IN RAISING CHILDREN BILINGUALLY

At Susanne Dopke will offer information on how bilingualism influences a child's development and what parents and other carers can do to help the child speak both languages. The session will be of interest to parents just starting out as well as those who are wondering if they are doing the right thing or who have to defend themselves against criticism. It will also support professionals who are dealing with bilingual families.

SIMPLE LITERACY GAMES FOR YOUNGER LEARNERS

This session will introduce you to some simple games and activities to help your children acquire some basic literacy skills in your langauge. There will be some 'old favourites' for you to adapt as well as some new ideas. THere will be the opportunity to share useful websites for language learning, so bring along a list of any websites you and yoru children use to support their language learning.

PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS FOR HELPING YOUR CHILD LEARN YOUR LANGUAGE

Susanne Dopke will give examples of practical strategies, whcih ensure the development of the community langauge and prevent or solve difficulties. THis will include supporting the child's first steps into language, as well as strategies, games and resources for the older pre-school child. This session will be of interest to parents of toddlers and pre-school children as well as professionals advising parents.

THINKING ABOUT LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AND SCHOOLING FOR YOUR CHILD

This session looks mainly at how school impacts on language development, focusing on both monolingual and bilingual five years olds. It aims to help parents decide on the right school for their child and provide strategies fo rthe continued development of all of the child's languages

PANEL: COMMUNITY IN ACTION

At Speakers on the panel will include parents and experts ative in fostering bilingualism in children. Discussion will include issues such as language, langauge education and how parents and carers can work together outside the home.
