NATIONAL PROJECT - Improvement in the National Coordination and Quality Assurance of Ethnic Schools Project

"This project is funded by the Australian Government through the Schools Languages Programme, administered by the Department of Education, Science and Training."

The Australian Government has provided funding to Community Languages Australia until December 2006 to strengthen the national coordination and quality assurance of after-hours ethnic/community language schools.

The objectives for this project are to:

  • Strengthen national coordination and promotion of ethnic languages and ethnic schools;
  • Strengthen and promote the quality of teaching and learning practices in ethnic schools across Australia including trialling a national quality assurance framework in 3 States and Territories; and
  • Enhance professional networking and professional learning for personnel involved in the delivery of languages taught through ethnic schools.

The funding will be used for national coordination and promotion of ethnic languages and schools, trialling the implementation of our Quality Assurance Framework, and facilitating professional learning and development opportunities for ethnic school managers and teachers across all States and Territories.

This project includes activities under the following 3 focus areas:

  • National coordination and promotion of ethnic languages and schools Including:
    • Development and publication of a National Policy Statement on the role of ethnic schools


    • Conducting consultation meetings, forums and collaborative activities with key stakeholders in each State and Territory and nationally to continue to strengthen:
      • awareness of the importance of ethnic schools in their delivery of language programs; and
      • awareness of the relevance of ethnic schools as complementary providers of languages training in government Languages policy Through consultation meetings, forums and collaborative activities with key Stakeholders in each State and Territory and nationally.
    • Redevelopment and maintenance of the Community Languages Australia website
    • Researching and documenting the ethnic language needs of emerging communities with a view to assisting them in developing policy and directions for establishing ethnic schools where appropriate.

     

  • Quality Assurance including:
    • Conducting workshops in each State and Territory to develop minimum requirements for each of the focus areas in the Quality Assurance Framework
    • Development of implementation guidelines for the Quality Assurance Framework
    • Development of professional development package for ethnic and/or community language teachers and associations on the Framework
    • Delivery of professional development workshops on the Framework in the three targeted trial jurisdictions
    • Conducting a review and evaluation of the trial implementation of the Quality Assurance Framework
    • Development of a plan for full implementation of the Framework
    • Development and publication of an Administration and Organisational Manual to be distributed to ethnic schools
    • Collation of available information on data relating to students studying ethnic languages, and the teacher training and qualifications of ethnic language teachers to identify professional development needs
  • Professional learning and development
    • Facilitate professional development opportunities for ethnic school managers and teachers across all States and Territories
    • Conducting workshops on the incorporation of information and communication technology into teaching and learning
    • Working with States and Territories Executive Officers to utilise existing networks and establish new networks to:
      • Develop professional learning activities; and
      • Determine current and future needs.
    • Maintenance of a national calendar of professional development activities on the Community Languages Australia website.
